Keep On Being Righteous
What do I do when things go wrong? What do I do when the roof caves in? The Psalmist (Psalm 11) asked and answered this question when the foundations were being shaken. The basic question is, “What can the righteous do when adversity strikes?” The answer to this question is obviously, “Keep on being righteous”.
What do I do when a terrible reversal comes swiftly and unmercifully to my life? I seek the face of God. I focus myself on that one thing - to seek His face. I might spend a lot of time in “who”? what? why?. When I seek the face of God and stand in His presence, I focus on Him and not me. When I pray the prayer Jesus taught me to pray, it immediately takes me to the Father in heaven, not someone on earth.
What do I do when an awful event grips my nation? I look up to hear the angels of heaven shouting “holy, holy, holy” around the presence of God. Isaiah 6 could hear the voice of his countrymen in the time of national calamity. He could have listened to the pundits of his day. He chose rather to see the Lord high and lifted up and hear the voice of those serving in the presence of God. He was focused on the eternal God rather than on the temporal adversity of his day.
What do I do when hateful persecution comes? Like John (Revelation 4) I look to see a throne immutable in the heavens. The one sitting on the throne has glory and radiance that outshines all but Himself. When I focus on the One on this unmovable throne I come to understand there are certainties in life that God establishes, and they will never change.
What do I do when an extreme thing happens? I turn quickly and surely to the God of all ages who never changes and encourages His children to come to Him. I can cast my anxiety and care on Him for He cares for me.
When bad things happen in my life, what can I do? I can listen to advice of many people. I can list my options as I see them. I can go to the wizened men for their counsel. Or I can seek the face of God and ask Him what Hs options are for me. I can stand in His presence and be transformed with His eternal power to have energy and resolve beyond human ability, human will, or human mind. I can pursue being righteous in His presence because He is delighted for me to seek His face.
What can the righteous do when all around is chaos, catastrophe, and calamity? What can a person do when the promotion at work falls through and is given to someone else? What can the young mother do when her husband announces his intention of divorce? What can the family do when their loved one has been through treatment after treatment and the health condition has not gotten better, but rather has worsened? What can the church do when faced with a scandal among it members? What can the righteous do? They can continue be righteous.
